In September 2001, the Philadelphia District Office of the EEOC filed this suit against Griffin Pipe Products Company, an iron pipe and fittings manufacturing company, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey. We do not have a copy of the complaint. However, according to an EEOC press release, the complaint alleged that the defendant discriminated against the charging party and twenty-one other black employees in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by failing to promote black employees to management positions because of their race and by giving advance information about managerial job openings to white employees. After some scheduling orders and a couple settlement conferences, the parties settled through a consent decree in February 2003.
The consent decree required the defendant to: provide Title VII training to employees, develop job descriptions for each position to reflect the required minimum qualifications, develop interview techniques that assess applicants on the basis of the required job qualifications, and pay $100,000 to be divided among the twenty-two claimants.
