In April 2003, the EEOC's Greenville office filed this suit in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina against an integrated and international network of corporations and partnerships owned by Randstad Holdings, a Dutch company, doing business as Randstad North America. The defendant employment agency was charged with violating Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 when it acquiesced to requests from client employers not to refer females for employment. A female employee of the defendant complained when handing the requests for the client employer and was retaliated against for her opposition to the unlawful practice by being discharged. The EEOC brought this suit on her behalf and on the behalf of the class of females who were not referred for employment and were thereby deprived of federally protected rights. The parties quickly came to an agreement in the form of a consent decree that was adopted by the court in September 2003. It awarded the employee complainant $20,000 and awarded $27,000 to the aggrieved class of females. Further, the defendant was enjoined from acquiescing to discriminatory requests and was required to report to the EEOC when it received them.
