Case Summary

The EEOC's San Francisco District Office brought this suit against Petco Animal Supplies in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, in June 1999. We do not have a copy of the complaint; however, according to an EEOC summary of the case, the defendant was accused of violating the Equal Pay Act and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by failing to pay female store managers at equal wage rates as males in those same positions. After some scheduling orders, the parties settled in December 1999 through a consent decree. According to the EEOC summary of the case, the decree apparently required the defendant to pay $41,024, to be distributed among five individuals, as well as an undisclosed amount for attorneys' fees. In addition, the defendant was required to change its compensation criteria to make the factors more objective.
