The EEOC's Detroit district office sued Unibar Maintenance Services, Inc. on September 10, 2001 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. The EEOC's complaint is unavailable, however the settlement agreement entered on April 29, 2002, explains that the EEOC alleged that Unibar violated Title VII when it discriminated against some employees based on sex (female) by creating a hostile work environment and retaliating against them for their complaints. The settlement agreement stipulated that Unibar would pay $12,500 in damages to the three aggrieved employees, revise its anti-discrimination policy, post a notice of compliance with Title VII, provide Title VII compliance training, and appoint a manager to ensure compliance with the consent decree.
