Case Summary

In September 2000, the EEOC's Charlotte District Office filed suit in U.S. District Court, Western District of North Carolina, against Nationwide Electrical Contracting, Inc. and successor company Douglas Electrical Contracting Inc. The complaint, which was later amended to name the individual owners of these companies as defendants, alleged that female employees were subjected to sexual harassment in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.

One of the charging parties intervened in the case. The case was largely resolved by a consent decree in March of 2002; a subsequent consent decree in April 2002 resolved the case entirely. The defendants were ordered to pay a total of $9,900 in compensatory damages, punitive damages, and attorney's fees. Nationwide Electrical Contracting was ordered to implement and distribute an anti-harassment policy, and to provide annual anti-discrimination training for all of its employees.
