Case Summary

On September 30, 2005, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission ("EEOC"), on behalf of an African American employee, filed a lawsuit in the District Court of Maryland, under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Title I of the Civil Rights Act of 1991, against IKEA. The EEOC sought injunctive relief, compensatory damages, punitive damages, attorneys' fees, and other forms of affirmative relief, claiming that the defendant subjected the complainant to disparate terms and conditions of employment when he was terminated in lieu of demotion because of his race.

On October 28, 2005, the plaintiff filed an amended complaint. On May 3, 2006, the District Court (Judge Deborah k. Chasanow) entered a consent decree where the defendant, among other things, agreed to pay the complainant $52,500.
