In December 2003, the EEOC district office in Detroit, Michigan brought this suit against the Daimler Chrysler Corporation, an international automobile manufacturer, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. The complaint alleged that the defendant violated the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) when it refused to reasonably accommodate an employee with a physical disability. Specifically, the defendant refused to provide her with a sign language interpreter at meetings or a device that would allow her to converse over the telephone.

The parties entered into a settlement agreement in January 2004. The defendant agreed to refrain from retaliating and discriminating based on disability, to pay the aggrieved employee $52,000, to provide her with an alpha-pager, to provide an interpreter for meetings, to engage in an interactive process if any other accommodations were needed, to expunge her employment record of any mention of this litigation, to post an EEO notice for three years, and provide EEO training. No fees or costs were awarded. The terms of the agreement ran for three years.

The decree was entered in 2004 and scheduled to last 2007. No further docket entries exist, so the case is closed.
