Case Summary

The EEOC's Miami district office sued Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. on February 17, 2005 in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida. The EEOC's complaint alleged that Wal-Mart violated Title VII when it discriminated against the complainant based on sex (female) by creating a hostile work environment. The parties entered into a consent decree on June 29, 2006 which stipulated that Wal-Mart would pay $25,000 to the complainant, develop and distribute an anti-harassment policy, post a notice of compliance with Title VII at the store specified in the consent decree, provide Title VII compliance training at the store specified in the consent decree, place a signed statement acknowledging compliance with Wal-Mart's anti-harassment policy in the offending manager's file, and report compliance with the consent decree and harassment complaints semiannually to the EEOC. The settlement term was 3 years. The docket sheet does not show any further enforcement; the case was presumably closed in 2009.
