In June 2001, the Honolulu Local Office (with participation from the San Francisco District Office) filed this suit against the Queen's Medical Center in U.S. District Court for the District of Hawaii. We do not have a copy of the complaint. However, according to an EEOC press release, the complaint alleged discrimination on the basis of national origin in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Specifically, the press release states that the defendant discriminated against the charging party, a Sri Lankan physician, and retaliated against him after he filed an internal complaint by retracting its support for his permanent visa application.

The parties had numerous discovery disputes, and the defendant filed a motion for summary judgment in April 2002. After this motion was denied in June 2002, the parties participated in a few settlement conferences and finally settled in September 2002. We do not have a copy of the settlement agreement. However, the EEOC press release states that the defendant was required to pay the charging party $150,000 in damages.
