In September 2000, the EEOC district office in Chicago, Illinois brought this suit against Christ Hospital & Medical Center, a general health care facility, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. The complaint alleged race discrimination in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The black female employee alleged she was subject to different terms and conditions from other non-black employee; received discipline that non-black employees were not subjected to; and that the aforementioned practices created an environment that would have forced any reasonable employee to quit his or her position, thus constructively discharging her. The parties agreed to trial by a magistrate judge and to attend a settlement conference, where the parties subsequently came to an agreement and a consent decree was entered in July 2001.

In the consent decree, the defendant agreed to (1) pay the aggrieved employee $40,350 in back pay, compensatory damages, and attorney's fees; (2) post notices concerning Title VII; (3) not retaliate or discriminate on the basis of race; (4) train all of its employees in race discrimination law; and (5) make semi-annual reports to the EEOC of complaints regarding race discrimination made by its employees.
