On April 30th, 2014, six same-sex couples filed a lawsuit in the Southern District of Ohio U.S. District Court against the State of Ohio. The plaintiffs, represented by private counsel, asked the court to declare that Ohio laws banning same-sex marriage were in violation of the Constitution, issue an injunction against enforcing the ban, and to award the plaintiffs compensation for expenses and attorney's fees, claiming that their constitutional rights were violated.

Specifically, the plaintiffs alleged that their rights to due process and equal protection have been abridged. The plaintiffs also said that they suffer harm by being denied tax and employment benefits that are available to different-sex couples, along with the social stigma of not being allowed to marry.

As of June 19th, 2014, the plaintiffs' motion for Temporary Restraining Order and Preliminary Injunction has not yet been resolved by the court (Judge Michael R. Barrett), and the case is still ongoing.
