In its first full year of operations, in 1966, EEOC obtained conciliation agreements with 111 employers, most of them located in the deep South. According to the agency's historical postings, available here, the most far reaching of the conciliation agreements involved the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company. The Newport News agreement gave class relief for approximately 5,000 black workers. The agreement provided that black workers performing the same jobs as white workers were to be given equal pay for their labor. The agreement also gave promotions to 3,200 black workers and required that all blacks receive an equal opportunity to participate in apprenticeship programs and compete for supervisory and craft jobs. The company also agreed to desegregate its facilities.
