In 1999, a group of female longshoremen filed suit against the International Longshoremen's Association in Florida Circuit Court. The plaintiffs alleged that sex discrimination, harassment, and retaliation constituted discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, 42 U.S.C. § 2000e. Specifically, the plaintiffs contended that female workers were repeatedly passed over for job assignments and that they were subjected to harassment, including unwanted touching and implied promises of work in exchange for sexual favors.

The court certified a settlement class in 2001 and a litigation class in 2003. In 2005, the court gave final approval to a settlement agreement that required the defendant to pay $1.65 million and give retroactive seniority.

Case documents were not accessible. Information from this summary was taken from the Class Action Litigation Report, Volume 6 Number 19.
