On May 7, 1993, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against Nassau County, New York and Police Benevolent Association of the Police Department of Nassau, New York in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. The Department of Justice sought injunctive relief.

On June 2, 1993, the District Court (Judge Leonard D. Wexler) approved a Consent Decree agreed to by the parties. The case was closed on June 7, 1993.
