On September 22, 1993, the United States Department of Justice ("D.O.J.") filed a lawsuit under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 against the Denver Housing Authority in the U.S. District Court District of Colorado. The D.O.J. sought injunctive relief, specifically requesting that the defendant be enjoined from continuing its discriminatory hiring practices and that the defendant be forced to pay a female employee back pay.
The DOJ alleged that the defendant discriminated against this female employee on the basis of her gender and unfairly terminated her employment at the Denver Housing Authority based on this discrimination.
On January 4, 1994, the court (Judge John Kane) issued a consent decree in which the defendant agreed to refrain from engaging in practices which discriminated on the basis of gender. The defendant also agreed to pay the employee $35,000 for back pay.
