On December 8, 1993, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against the Board Cherokee County Commission under 42 U.S.C. § 2000e, et seq. ("Title VII") in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama. The Department of Justice complaint sought injunctive relief; a proposed settlement was filed concurrently.

On December 28, 1993, the district court (Judge William M. Acker Jr) approved the Consent Decree submitted by the parties and terminated the case. That decree is not available.
