On May 4, 1994, the United States government filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee against the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, under Title VII, 42 U.S.C. § 2000e et seq. According to a caselist shared by the Department of Justice, the plaintiff alleged employment discrimination on the basis of race.

On May 17, 1995, both parties filed a joint motion for order approving a consent decree. On May 25, 1995, the Court (Judge Robert Echols) granted the joint motion, approving the consent decree. According to a caselist shared by the Department of Justice, the defendant agreed to pay $27,000 in damages.

On December 10, 1998, the Court issued an order granting the defendant's motion for final order, concluding the case in its entirety.
