On October 16, 1996, the United States Department of Justice filed a job related sexual discrimination lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi against the City of Canton. The Twentieth Judicial District of Mississippi was a movant in the case and supported the defendant. A settlement agreement was denied on September 30, 1997 by Magistrate Judge Alfred G. Nicols. A jury trial was held on November 13, 1997 and verdict was rendered for the defendant on November 18, 1997. On November 20, 1997, the District Court (Judge Tom S. Lee) entered judgment for the City of Canton finding the plaintiff responsible for court costs and dismissing the case. The case was closed on that same day. The plaintiff was billed $9,921.43 in court costs.
