The plaintiff in this case is a Missourian man who was in a committed partnership with another man for 15 years before his partner, a state trooper, was killed in the line of duty. Missouri offered survivor benefits to spouses of state troopers who were killed in the line of duty, but excluded committed same-sex partners from receiving those benefits.
